South Bohemian Theatre is professional four ensemble theatre based in Ceske Budejovice since 1919. (Opera, ballet, drama, puppet show). Theatre uses three stages: Main building on the rive bank Malse (drama, small operas), Cultural house Metropol (opera, ballet), Small Theatre in Hradebni street (puppet show, studio-drama).

South Bohemian Theatre is famous (since 1958) for its open air Revolving Theatre, based in the chateau gardens in the historical town of Cesky Krumlov.

The foreign visitors are mostly attracted by opera and ballet performances both in Ceske Budejovice and Revolving Theatre.



Opera

Opera mostly focuses on rare Italian buffo operas from the 18th and early 19th century. ( Salieri´s Falstaff, Haydn´s La vera costanza). The repertoire includes also works by Czech famous composers (Smetana, Dvorak, Janacek, Martinu). South Bohemian Opera company´s main coproduction partner is Landestheater Niederbayern Passau (Germany).

Ballet

The artistic director Attila Egerhazi (Hungary) transformed the South Bohemian Ballet into a modern European dance theatre company. Aside from performances in Ceske Budejovice the ballet often travels to many theatres in Europe ( Hungary, Germany, Netherlands). Company is pleased to work with world famous choreographers, especially with Jiri Kylian.
