South Bohemia is rated as one of the most popular and largest areas of the Czech Republic. South Bohemia is well known for historical monuments and castles, and many of them are part of UNESCO. Among the most visited places belong Hluboká nad Vltavou and ČeskýKrumlov. Three major Czech rivers Vltava, Otava and Luznice flow through South Bohemia.


South Bohemia cover a large area which is bordered by Austria in the south, by Germany(Bavaria) in the southwest and in the east by Moravia well know for its wine. The Metropolis of South Bohemia is České Budějovice, which is famous for its brewing history - come and have a beer Budvar, which is famous throughout the world.


Landscape of the Region is formed with numerous ponds and picturesque villages in the middle of the two basins, Českobudějovická and Trěbonská basin. At the border with Austria there are Novohradské Mountains and at southwest border there are the second highest mountains in Bohemia called Šumava.


Other major cities of South Bohemia are Písek in which vicinity we can find Zvíkov Stronghold and Orlík Castle. Next you may be interested in Tábor, which is a hussite town with a historic townsquare, Hussite Museum and accessible historical underground. Close to the town of Tábor there is Chýnov cave or the spa town Bechyně, where you can find another castle. The town of Český Krumlov is dominating feature of South Bohemia. In 1992 the historic town center was accepted as a part UNESCO Heritage. Above the town rises one of the largest castles in Central Europe, the Český Krumlov castle.


Very popular and frequently visited place is the Lipno Reservoir, which serves mainly for recreational purposes and can offer a wide range of water sports, winterskating and in the nearby mountains you can enjoy skiing.

 

Cultural activities

South Bohemia is the site for many cultural festivals and happenings. Five-Petalled Rose Celebrations and St. Wenceslas Festivities both taking place in Český Krumlov belong among the most significant culture events of this region together with the Revolving Theatre which the world’s unique representative of a natural outdoor theatre with an original design and utilization of the scenic space.
